Ready or Not, Here They Come (Facebook Changes, That is!)

by Sarah Novak on September 23, 2011

Yes, Facebook just changed your feed this week AND it will be rolling out an even bigger change before the end of September.  Whatever you do, DON’T PANIC.  Here’s an overview of what you need to know (and how you can keep your feed looking the same if you really hate it).

An Overview of the Changes to Your NewsFeed

There’s been a lot of unhappy chatter online these last few days as people realized that their Facebook NewsFeed had been tweaked.  Funny how pissed we can get at a company for forcing us to change when the valuable product is FREE for our use!  :)  Yes, Facebook is the online app we love to hate.

So, two days ago your feed changed.  Here are 7 things you should take note of:

  1. Your Top Stories and Most Recent Stories are now combined into 1 feed (you had the choice of how you wanted to see it before, remember?)  Facebook decides what shows up based on who you interact with most and how much attention the post is getting.
  2. Pictures are bigger!
  3. You now have a live feed ticker in the upper right-hand corner that tells you those annoying things like who friended who and which book your sister likes.  Personally, I’m happy to have that stuff out of my feed, as I found it annoying.  But hey, if you enjoyed it, you still have the opportunity to see it!
  4. You can now subscribe to someone’s feed without being friends (if they allow it in their privacy settings).
  5. You can decide what percent of posts you want to see from friends (options include: All Updates, Most Updates, Important Updates Only).  By default, your current friends have been set up for Most Updates, so if you want to change this, you need to go into each person and update it).
  6. You can now ‘organize’ and ‘group’ your friends.  When you add a new friend, you get to identify if they are a close friend or acquaintance.  With close friends, FB automatically sets your post options to All Updates whereas with an acquaintance it sets it to Important Updates Only).  In addition, it looks for similar groups you share like College, Employer, etc and automatically creates a list that identifies them as part of that group.  All of these groups can be found under lists.  **Note: You can create your own lists and group people as you’d like as well.
  7. It now says your name in the upper right corner instead of profile.  It’s to help those with pages differentiate whether they’re logged in as themselves or their page.

How to Remove the New Live Ticker

If you hate the ticker like I do, remove it using these instructions.

How to Get Your Old Chronological Feed Back

  1. Go to your Newsfeed Page
  2. Click on lists on the left side
  3. Click on the Create Lists tabs on the right side at the top
  4. Make your new list Most Recent
  5. Add all your friends (this is a process, but worth it.)
  6. Click on that list each time you want to look at your Newsfeed updates and it will show your old feed.

**Note: Make sure you’ve gone through all your friends and changed the default settings as listed in #5 above.

A Little Humor to Help you Cope

Part 2 of the Changes: Your New Profile

Yeah, I know that was a lot to take in.  Unfortunately, that’s just the half of it.  On Thursday, September 29th your profile will become a Timeline (see my photo above for an example of what it will look like).

Here’s a pretty video of Timeline courtesy of Facebook:

And here’s a FULL PREVIEW of what your new profile will look like: https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline.  If you’re interested in getting your Timeline TODAY, you can click on the “Sign Me Up” button at the bottom of the page.  If that doesn’t work for some reason, you can access it as a developer in 8 easy steps by FOLLOWING THESE DIRECTIONS.  Or you can always just wait the 6 days for its full release!  **Note: You can only see my new Timeline if you activate your own early.

So What the Heck IS Timeline Anyways?

Timeline is basically an online scrapbook of your life, pulling in all your statuses, photos and online application usage.  You can now do lots more stuff within Facebook including: watching shows on Hulu, listening to songs on spotify and reading your favorite news application.  In addition, you’ll now know what your friends are watching, listening to and reading (and they’ll know the same in return).  Don’t want to share that much?  Then just don’t give the apps permission!

The new timeline changes aren’t as easy to describe, so I’m just going to refer you to this Mashable Overview.

**Note: Your timeline is only able to be seen by approved friends.

Honestly, I’m pretty excited about the changes.  Kinda cool to think that 30 years down the road I could look back on my timeline (or whatever it’s evolved into) and see a multi-media history of my life.  Yeah, it’s definitely a lot of information to put out there, but I feel like the benefit outweighs the privacy trade-off for me.  That being said, ABSOLUTELY make sure you’ve reviewed your privacy settings!

I’d love to hear what you love and hate about all the changes.  Let’s hear some chatter people!

Fiverr: Incredible Offerings, All for $5!

by Sarah Novak on January 21, 2011

Cool Find ALERT!

My cousin’s wife Stephanie introduced me to this rockin’ site and it feels too awesome to keep to myself… The site is called Fiverr and it lists items and services that people are willing to offer for $5.  My head was spinning after looking at it for just a few minutes…. there are loads of applications for entrepreneurs in addition to incredibly creative gift ideas.  Here are a few of the $5 bargains that caught my eye:

  • Have a Christmas Story written about your child for $5
  • Get a logo designed
  • A custom dog-tag necklace
  • Your picture turned into an anime character that you can use as your Gravatar
  • A personalized happy birthday song or greeting recorded for your loved one
  • A personalized love poem or Shakespearian sonnet
  • Correct your college paper
  • Plan a trip for you
  • Have your tarot read
  • Edit 5 pictures

So those are just a handful of the thousand represented on this site.  It’s wicked-cool.  Do take 5 minutes and check it out.  $5 can go a VERY long way here…

Time to Get Your Gravatar ON!

by Sarah Novak on January 12, 2011

Since my posts have been getting a bit heavy lately, I thought we’d lighten it up today with a little social media lesson.  Today’s lesson involves the how and why of getting your own Gravatar!

What is a gravatar, you ask?

Quite simply, it is a small image that appears next to your comments or posts when you interact in the blogosphere.  It’s universally recognized by THOUSANDS of blogs and once you set it up your picture will automatically pull in when you use a corresponding email address to leave your comment (note: the email address is not published).

Here’s an example of what my gravatar looks like when I reply to comments on my blog or someone else’s.

So why should you get one?

Because COOL BLOGGING PEEPS have one!  It lets people come to recognize you and your contributions and puts a face behind your brilliant words.  And sadly, the alternative is the ugly little personality-void ‘gray man’.

How do you get one?

This is the part you’re going to like because it’s oh-so-easy.  Only 5 quick steps!

Step 1: GO HERE.

Step 2: Input your preferred email address that you use for personal stuff.

Step 3: Upload a photo from your computer.

Step 4: Crop it to fit the box proportions.

Step 5: Ta-da!  You’ve got yourself a gravatar!

So Here’s the Challenge:

I’d like to see 50 of my readers sign up for gravatars! To participate in the challenge, follow the steps above and claim your gravatar. Then just leave a short comment below this post letting me know you got one (and showing off your new gravatar).  Can’t wait to see how many we get because as you all know – I LOVE COMMENTS and would do anything to encourage more of them…

PS – This is a perfect opportunity for those who are shy about posting comments to try it out… it’s not scary, I promise.

Macau: A Larger than Life Spectacle

by Sarah Novak on October 15, 2010

This will be my third and final post about Hong Kong.  Today’s post will actually focus on Macau, an island that is a 1 hour ferry ride from Hong Kong.  Macau is best known as the Vegas of Southeast Asia, full of eye-popping shows, gold-plated everything and poker tables galore.  Nick and I aren’t into gambling, but we did enjoy wandering around the city taking in each of the beautiful venues.

These 3 shots were taken in the Venetian.  It is nearly identical to the one in Vegas, although rumored to be 4 times the size.  Haven’t been to the one in Vegas, so I can’t set the record straight today.  It was lovely though — my camera was happily clicking away!

The highlight of our day was seeing a production at the City of Dreams Complex called The House of Dancing Water.  Here’s a quick 1 minute overview of the show so that you can get a sense of what it was like.

We purchased our tickets late in the game, so only expensive ones were left (a little over $100 US).  Honestly though, in my opinion it was well worth the cost.  With a price tag of $250 million to create, the show was like nothing I have ever seen (and is touted as the most technically-advanced show in existence).

It had elements of the circus we saw in Shanghai (namely acrobatics, contortionists and motorcyclists) and aspects of Cirque de Soleil (aerialists, gymnastics), yet it also added in new aspects like diving, dance and a fountain show.  At times there was so much going on that I got overwhelmed trying to determine where to focus my attention for fear that I’d miss something.

What was most impressive was the stage.  One fun fact about the stage, it was designed by I.M. Pei’s son!  Pretty cool that Dad did the Louvre architecture and now the Son has created a 1-of-a-kind performance venue…

Quite honestly, even if there were no people in the show, I would have paid to just see the stage do tricks.  It was mind-blowing watching what it could do.  And just in case the ground show wasn’t enough, there was often an aerial element going on as well.

At various points throughout the show, the stage:

  • became a diving tank that divers leaped into from 100 feet up
  • had structures like the ‘galleon’ (3 photos up) that rose out of the water
  • became a stable, dry platform that motorcycles drove on
  • had fountains shoot out of it (above photo)
  • lit up (2 photos up)
  • had performers disappear into the water, never to come up again (I’m still trying to work that one out, maybe scuba gear and an escape hatch down below?)

Before I end this post, just wanted to give you another video that takes you ‘behind the scenes’.  It’s really fascinating to see how it all comes together.  I always enjoy knowing how the magic happens…

Truly, this show was like nothing I have ever seen before.  And since it requires a unique stage to support it, if you’re going to Hong Kong/Macau, it makes sense to see it now, since it’s never going to be a travelling production.  I’m so glad we splurged and I hope you will too if you have the chance!

Welcome to Our New Thesis Site!

by Sarah Novak on July 19, 2010

Thesis Theme for WordPress: Options Galore and a Helpful Support Community

Greetings Blog Readers – I am THRILLED to unveil our new souped-up blog, NOVAKISTAN!  I’ve been craving a fancy blog like this for quite some time and finally had the guts to go for it this weekend.  After 20 hours of technical work and a major code recovery from technical wizard Nona Jordan of The Business Yogini (I got a nasty Parse Error that she fixed), I am finally on my way.

This site was created in WordPress using an advanced theme called Thesis.  I am still getting the hang of it, but it is truly incredible what this theme allows you to do without knowing much code.  Despite still being in the overwhelmed phase, I know I will get the hang of it after spending more time with it.  If you’d like to get one of these beautiful sites for yourself, just click the Thesis picture above to access my affiliate link.

In the spirit of “Better Done than Perfect”, I am launching this site before all the final tweaking has been done.  I figure that will make the user experience more fun.  You may just show up one day and something has moved or changed colors.  Going to be really honest, this is hard for me but I’m embracing the motto of Imperfect Action is ALWAYS better than PERFECT INACTION!  Agreed?

The element I am most proud of is the header, which I created all by my little-old-self in Photoshop Elements!  I’ve never done anything like that before and boy was it fun!  Technology blows my mind… especially when you can figure it out just by playing around!

Thanks for making the migration over to this new site.  The easiest way to stay up-to-date is to click the orange “subscribe button” in the upper right corner and pick your favorite feed reader to receive my posts in.  Otherwise, make sure and bookmark this new link!

More posts coming soon….

Look Mom, I'm an Astronaut!

by Sarah Novak on March 4, 2010

Richard Branson totally inspires me.  Talk about a man who’s dedicated his life to making the impossible POSSIBLE.  Let’s take his latest project, Virgin Galactic, for example.  In this new venture of his, Richard has decided that every person deserves a chance to go into space.  I’m going to repeat that, so it sinks in.  EVERY PERSON DESERVES A CHANCE TO GO INTO SPACE.  That’s no small goal, huh?

How’s he going to make it so that every kid who has ever dreamed of being an astronaut can fulfill that desire?  Through a combination of savvy business strategy and innovative technology, of course!  Before I tell you the juicy details about how you can book YOUR ticket, let me just remind you of 2001 when American businessman Dennis Tito paid 20 million to be the tourist in space.  At this point I’m sure you’re still thinking, “Yeah right, like I could ever afford that!”  And at that rate, neither could I, but thanks to Sir Richard, you can now be in space for a mere $200,000 – less than the cost of a condo!

Seriously friends, do the math, in less than 10 years he has brought the cost down to 1% of what Dennis Tito paid.  UNREAL!  Makes me want to add it to my bucket list…

I’m not going to pretend that I fully understand the mechanics, but apparently how it works is that the spaceship is tethered to a mothership that carries it 50,000 feet up, at which point it disconnects and takes off.  Another innovate feature is that once it reaches a maximum altitude, the wings “feather” up to provide additional resistance (pictured at top).

Here are some of the specifics for those of you who are ready to join the 300+ people that have already booked:

  • Take-off is from Spaceport America in New Mexico, home of the first commercial spaceport.
  • Total flight cost – $200,000.
  • Flights begin in 2010.
  • There will be 1 flight per week, 6 passengers per flight.
  • Passengers must undergo medical exams and 3 days of training prior to the flight.
  • Each flight will be approximately 2 1/2 hours in length, with 5 minutes of weightlessness.
  • Each Virgin Galactic tourist will officially be certified as an honest-to-goodness astronaut.

Ready to book your ticket?  CLICK HERE

Finally, I leave you with a quick video that shows highlights from the Spaceship’s unveiling:

Greetings- I hope you enjoyed last week’s photo and video highlights of our time with the whale sharks.  After a weekend of extensive usage in Donsol, we have nothing but rave reviews for the Canon Powershot D10.  It truly is the perfect adventure camera with it’s combination of durability and features.

Here are a few of the things we like about it:

  • Waterproof to 33 Feet
  • Cold Resistant from 14-104 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Shockproof up to 4 Feet
  • 12.1 Mega pixels, 3x optical zoom
  • Face Detection Technology
  • A bright 2.5 inch color LCD
  • 4 accessory posts around the corners that allow you to attach a cord with carabiners or a wrist-strap (perfect for those treacherous times when scaling mountains or attacking the rapids)
  • Superb video capabilities
  • Large rubberized buttons that make for easy usage when underwater or wearing gloves
  • A bargain at just over $300

10 Trends for 2010 in Less than 2 Minutes

by Sarah Novak on January 28, 2010

My thoughts this week have been filled with curiosity around what 2010 will hold for both myself and the planet.  Times are a changing.  Just listening to stories about what expat life was like 5 years ago leaves me in awe….it’s a cool time to be alive.  Found this video and thought it did a good job of summing up some of the emerging trends for 2010.  Nothing too shocking, but still worth 2 minutes of your time.

Let me know which trends you see impacting your life most.  Are you making any major habit changes in 2010?

The Grocery Game: Why You Should Consider Playing

by Sarah Novak on October 3, 2009

grocery Game

This is a bit of a deviation from my normal posts, but it seemed too good not to pass along, so here goes!  Just learned about this site called The Grocery Game.  Teri, the woman that began the site, started studying the sale cycles of Supermarkets 10 years ago and producing a weekly list based on the best time to buy.  Members of her site plug in their zipcode and select the lists for the stores they frequent.  The color-coded system tells you which items to stock up on and which to wait and get until the following week.  The list also layers in coupons and explains how to get the best value from them in combination with store-specific sales.

Grocery Game
Let’s just jump straight to the cost, shall we?  A 4 week trial membership is free. After that, the cost is $10 per list for 8 weeks.  Additional lists for that same 8 week period are an extra $5.  I searched my old St. Paul zipcode and found CVS, Cub, Whole Foods and Rainbow.  Fun fact: The article I read stated that the average family of 4 who participates saves $512 a month on groceries.  Seems like an easy way to me to find some extra money each month!  Since we can’t partake here, those of you that check it out, please report back and let us know if it’s as good as it sounds!
