Celebrating Fiestas Patrias in Style!

Peru’s Independence Day is coming up on July 28th.  People have been showing their pride all month long, with many wearing pins, some adorning their car with a flag and EVERY house putting up a flag (it’s required or you can get fined).  We got to celebrate the holiday at my language school, Idiomas Católica, with an hour long fiesta.  My class was in charge of putting together a song for the celebration and decided on Todos Queremos un Perú Feliz by Gianmarco.

There were a few of us with musical skills, so our group added in a bit of extra flare by supplementing with guitar and drums.  I got to play the Cajón, which is a Peruvian drum used in Afro-Peruvian style of music.  It’s  essentially a hollow box that makes a variety of sounds depending on where you strike it.  I had an absolute BLAST and will most-definitely be getting one to play at the house!  You can see me getting ready above on the far right.

Each class was responsible for either a song, dance or food tasting.  Above you can see one of the dancing groups.

This is my friend Amanda (who I met in the park by our house) – her group was one of the other classes responsible for a dance.

And finally, here’s an example of what the food stands looked like.  Each one featured a different type of Peruvian cuisine, along with explanations of each.

As you can see from the pictures, it was a fabulously good time!  I am thankful for opportunities like these that allow me to get to know the culture more deeply.  Two thumbs up for Idiomas Católica, they have a fantastic language program (at a very reasonable price too)!
