Hi Sarah and Nick! I would just like to say how much I like this site! It is definitely the best diplomat blog!! I am from Australia but hoping to get into a similar career as Nick, after University and such…I was just wondering if it is common to have female diplomats? And are most of them married? Also, is the spouses’ occupation generally over after you move away from your home country?
Thanks, keep up the good work and I love the name Nia! :)
Hi Estelle- Thanks for leaving a comment. Glad you have enjoyed our blog! I’ve been slowing my blogging schedule a bit this summer while I’m on home leave, but hopefully I can get back into my normal posting schedule this fall (baby-willing!) I can only speak to what I’ve seen in the US State Dept (Australia might be different) but I’d say there are an equal number of male and female Diplomats. Based on my 2 years of observing, it seems like fewer female Diplomats come in married (or they are part of a tandem officer couple). A spouses occupation does not necessarily have to end, although you often have to get creative. Nurses, Teachers, and Internet-based entrepreneurs seem to have the easiest time transferring their career. But I really believe anything is possible. I’m a Personal Coach/Life Coach and all my work can be done via skype or phone, so I’m fortunate in that my work hasn’t changed much. However, I have seen that some spouses hold a lot of resentment if they can’t transition their career easily.
Good Luck Estelle!
Sarah
Hi Sarah!
Just stopped by your blog to see how you two were doing and all the places you have gone – And I was delighted to see that you had a baby last Oct! Congrats to one of my all time favorite wedding painting couples! Best wishes to you all- Nicole
ok, after browsing more, I realized you had your beautiful daughter in 2011! She is so adorable. Sorry I am behind the times :)
Hey- Thanks for checking in on us! We are doing well, definitely settling in to this lifestyle. Parenting threw us a tough learning curve, but we’re getting there now… I hope your business is thriving! Your beautiful painting is moving with us all over the world and hangs in our bedroom. We LOVE it! XOXO, Sarah
