An Uncanny Resemblance

by Sarah Novak on July 22, 2012

Nick and I were sad to learn that Lonesome George died at Age 100 at his home in the Galapagos (just shy of us meeting him in December).  George was supposedly the last of his breed, but after carefully studying the above photos, we believe it’s possible that his species may not actually be extinct…

Breaking Trend Alert: The Strip

by Sarah Novak on January 3, 2012

AP News Bulletin: This just in.  Babies all over the world are embracing what has come to be know as “The Strip”.  This unique hair statement can only be acquired by vigorously rubbing your head on any and all surfaces in a repetitive back and forth motion.  In order to avoid chafing, it is key to select softer surfaces – this baby, who prefers to remain anonymous, recommends rubbing on organic cotton or high thread count sheets to avoid painful skin rashes.

The key to properly executing this trend is to make sure that there are copious amounts of hair above and below “the strip” and that the line is cleanly maintained so as to prominently stand out.  Sources say that as the trend becomes more widespread babies may even begin tattooing  “the strip.”  Rest assured that we’ll keep you posted on any key developments so that your baby can stay in the know.

Sending Holiday Wishes from DC!

by Sarah Novak on December 25, 2011

Just wanted to share one of my favorite holiday songs with you to celebrate.  It’s not very well-known, so perhaps you’ll love it so much that you’ll have to add it to your collection!  Wishing you all a wonderful holiday, wherever you may be…

I don’t know about you, but I get such a kick out of OK Go’s music videos.  They always have such a fresh, creative element in them.  This one is no different, featuring the Notre Dame Marching Band.  I suppose this would be a good time to share with you that for all 4 years of High School I had the privilege of being in Marching Band.  And yes, we did cool formations and marched in parades.  And I was extra cool because I played the clarinet and got to play the melody (which I thought was a lot more fun than the sustained notes the low brass always had to play – no offense low brass players, just not my thing).  So there, now you know another piece of my fascinating history.  I so wish I had a picture to share that would make this visual complete.  Alas, they’re all packed away…

Have a good day all and get ready for tomorrow’s post about my recent experience with energy healing!

Hilarious, helpful tutorial on the “Filipino Accent.”  No lie, I run into comprehension problems on a daily basis … now I can decode better!

A Primer on Filipino Foods

by Sarah Novak on October 8, 2010

I don’t usually post videos two days in a row but this parody is so hilarious that it merits some rule-breaking.  Nick and I couldn’t stop laughing – highlights of the video for me included Coke-in-a-bag and Magic Mic.  Leave your comments and let me know what you think of it!

Back in MNL!

by Sarah Novak on September 28, 2010

Ahhhh, home sweet Manila!  Boy does it feel good to be back.  Don’t get me wrong, I had a sensational trip, but there’s just something SOOOO sweet about arriving back home (especially when your husband’s there waiting for you!)  Since my jam-packed schedule didn’t allow much time for blogging about the trip, I thought I’d share a few highlights and stories.  Here goes…

My top 5 Food Experiences:

1.  Papa Murphy’s Paparoni Pizza (Shockingly, this pizza was even better than I remembered it and has been on my craving list for many, many months.  It was pure bliss eating that pie).
2.  Caribou Coffee’s Milk Chocolate Chip Mocha (enjoyed 6 over the course of my 3 weeks at home — couldn’t get over the insane yumminess of having a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips  melted into the drink — I decided to overlook the calorie implications)
3.  A Deep Fried State Fair Corn Dog (I know I don’t need to give an explanation for why this one was so good)
4.  A Ham, Pear and Gruyere Panini from Hell’s Kitchen (Quite possibly one of the best savory/sweet combinations I’ve ever tasted.  Sinfully good!)
5.  Izzy’s Ice Cream (No one does ice cream quite like the midwest.  The cows make all the difference…)

Classic Filipino Moment:

On my last flight from Tokyo to Manila, I ended up sitting next to a Filipino guy in his mid-20′s.  Everything about our exchange was exactly as I’ve come to expect from Filipinos.  First, his name.  Remember when I told you that Filipinos take great pride in choosing creative names (and most have a story behind them).  Well, I couldn’t help laughing when this guy introduced himself.  ”Hi.  I’m Michael.  Michael Angelo.”  I said, “Like the painter?” and he replied, “Yup, I was born on his birthday and named after him.”  Me: “Of course you were!”  :)

Next I should mention that we were in a 3 seat row (I was next to the window) and despite the fact that we had an open seat, he insisted on sitting in the middle seat so that we could talk the entire flight.  And talk we did (any attempts to read my book were quite unsuccessful).  I learned all about his life as a 2nd officer on a Japanese tanker ship.  I conveniently did NOT mention that my husband was one of the people that interviews seafarers like him, as I was not particularly feeling like answering questions about the American Visa process.  I did however get to assist him in selecting a lovely piece of jewelry from the In-flight Catalog for him to give to his girlfriend!  The entire exchange totally brightened my mood.  I ‘heart’ Filipinos!

PS – Just in case you forgot, this is a big week for us.  We’re expecting to have our next post assignment by the end of the week.  Be sure and stay tuned to the blog frequently this week, as I’ll post as soon as we know!

Ooops I did it Again

by Sarah Novak on September 17, 2010

Hello All- I am well aware of the fact that I’ve been a very bad blogger lately.  You’ll be happy to know that I am thoroughly enjoying my time here and in classic Sarah Miller fashion have overscheduled to the max.  In fact, my body is rebelling and currently threatening to halt my remaining plans with an oncoming cold.  Guess I’m not as young as I used to be…

In an effort to keep some semblance of routine, I am posting a new release from Sam Tsui (just like I usually do each Thursday).  He continues to make me smile, even when I’m sick.  Hope you enjoy it.  Posting is going to continue to be sporadic until I get back in Manila in a few weeks!  Please be patient with me, okay?
