Lilongwe, Malawi: July 2016

Get to Know Our Next Home:
- Where It Is: Malawi is a landlocked country in Southeast Africa that borders Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania
- Size: It’s about the size of Pennsylvania
- Population Size: 821,000 in Lilongwe (for comparison, metro Manila had 12 million and Lima had 10 million)
- Nickname: The Warm Heart of Africa (because it’s people are rumored to be some of the kindest you’ll ever meet)
- Languages: Chichewa and English (Malawi gained independence from Britain in 1964). Prior to 1964, it was know as Nyasaland.
- Currency: Malawian Kwacha
- Major Religions: Christianity (80%), Islam (20%)
- Average Life Expectancy: 55 years
- Temps: 70’s and 80’s year round!
- Main Exports: Tobacco (70%), Sugar and Tea
- Average Annual Income: $100-200 a year
- Lake Malawi: Largest freshwater lake in Africa covering, 1/5 of Malawi. Home to more species of fish than any other lake in the world.
- Wildlife: The Majete Wildlife Reserve re-gained “Big Five” status in 2013 (poaching had decimated animal populations in prior decades).
- Nominations: Named one of the top 10 countries in the world to visit in 2014 by Lonely Planet.
