Settling In

We are almost one week in and I’m floored by how quickly the time is going. It’s been a shockingly busy first week and I attribute that to a few things:

1. Nia’s school was already in full swing.

2. The General Services Office at the Consulate is very well run and on top of things.

3. Our sponsors were super helpful and offered to assist with various things we needed to set-up.

4. I joined the American Community Support Association (ACSA) board which oversees the commissary, cafeteria and some community event planning.  :) So there were several meetings for that this week too.

I should probably mention now that this post will likely just be a bunch of random musings. But you’ve never seemed to mind random musings in the past, so I’m going to roll with it.

Wins for the Week:

1. I hired Alice, our new housekeeper/cook. She will be starting mid-September and we’re going to try having her live-in

2. I have a working phone! I can’t even tell you how much head-bobble interpretation was required to get a phone. Every time I asked a question, the answer was conveyed with a bobble. Was sooooo confusing. I need a bobble interpreter…

3. I completed the Consulate Orientation and should have a badge within a few day’s time! Not having a badge is a big pain.

4. We can make purchases from the Consulate’s Commissary!

5. I successfully set-up delivery for meat and milk (yay me!!)

6. We should have internet and cable by this weekend!

7. We got Nia up and running at school, including on the school bus!

Not too shabby, huh? I’m proud of myself. Any one of those tasks can be super daunting. Big shout out to the Consulate support teams and our amazing sponsors Eve & Max for helping us this week. It feels sooooo good to be relatively set-up.

Nia Updates

ASAs – Nia started her after-school-activities (ASAs) this week. She has Mini Tennis on Mondays, Bollywood Dancing on Wednesday and Robotics on Friday. AND we got into a bonus swim class on Saturdays. She hasn’t been to Tennis, Robotics or Swimming yet but Bollywood dance was a huge hit. The instructor is an actual Bollywood Choreographer (go figure) and she told me they did “real dances from the movies”. Her group will be performing at the India Day school celebration in November. Should be exciting!

Birthday Parties – Nia got invited to her first birthday party. It’s in a conference room at the Taj, a swanky hotel. Looks like birthdays are a big deal here. May have to rethink the pool party that I was planning to do for Nia’s Bday…

What’s on Tap for the Weekend

Friday: We’re going to a Kid’s Movie Night, BBQ and Happy Hour with the Consulate. Should be a great way to meet people.

Saturday: Nia has her first swimming lesson. And I’m going on a day-long shopping tour with a group from the Consulate. SUPER EXCITED.

Sunday: Relax/Swim. Maybe venture out.

Monday: Although it’s Labor Day, Nia has school. But Nick’s off so we’re taking advantage of the opportunity to do adult exploring. We’ll start the day with a breakfast at the Elementary School Headmaster’s House and then do a customized tour of the city with a tour company. Should be another really fun day.

So there you have it. Consider yourself updated! Ciao for now. Sarah
