Nia’s 1st Haircut

by Sarah Novak on May 13, 2013

972227_10151668415116663_369871229_nWell, we made it nearly 19 months before having to trim those beautiful blonde locks…. I delayed as long as I could, but her bangs were starting to cover her eyes and the stubborn kiddo refuses to wear clips for me (but she’s just fine doing it for the nanny).  So off we went to the Jockey Plaza Mall to the kiddy hair shop called Safari Kids.

943138_10151668412546663_171698181_nI should start by saying that I was expecting this to go horrendously.  My child doesn’t even like to be restrained long enough to receive a hug, let alone sit still in a chair and let someone touch her hair.  To combat this, we employed a multi-pronged distraction technique, complete with TV, books, toys, the car chair and our magic weapon: ICE CREAM (with a little bitty fun spoon).

Much to my surprise, our tactics worked.  She did try to pull off the cape a few times and she swatted at the guy while he was trying to cut her bangs, but I found that if I just shoved a spoonful of ice cream in her mouth she’d become distracted by the yummy-ness (Not too surprising honestly, since she is the daughter of an ice cream addict and all).

428395_10151668413706663_539615873_nSo folks, the motto of the story is: ice cream is the answer to all problems!

A Meet and Greet with Peruvian Farm Animals

by Sarah Novak on February 23, 2013

_MG_2779

It’s summer here and we’ve been capitalizing on the good weather by doing lots of fun outdoorsy stuff.  One of our adventures this week was a trip to Granja Arriero (Arriero Farm), a small farm/petting zoo an hour outside of Lima, near Pachacamac.  Nia’s obsessed with animals as of late, so I knew this would be a HUGE HIT.  What I didn’t expect was all the fun we’d have with other Peruvian children!

_MG_2755

Due to the fact that it’s summer break, there was a whole group of kids there.  I was touched by how sweet they were to Nia, bringing animals over for her to pet and being patient with her crazy antics (aka: ADD tendencies).  A couple of them even decided to stay with us the entire time we were there!  Here she is petting a cuy (guinea pig).  This will probably be someone’s dinner soon, as cuy is crazy-popular here in Peru.  Peruvians are always shocked when I tell them that we keep Guinea Pigs as pets in the US.  I have yet to try one, but I feel it wouldn’t be right to leave Peru without at least a bite.  I’ll keep you posted.

_MG_2772

Dogs are Nia’s favorite animal of the moment, but the bunnies and guinea pigs seemed to capture her attention quite nicely as well.  That is, until she saw someone holding a cell phone….

_MG_2766

And as usual, she managed to use her charm to acquire the cell phone for her enjoyment.  Honestly, I am amazed at how frequently people hand over their phones to my child!

_MG_2776

Nia’s other obsession of the moment is “Big Kids”.  Basically, if there are older kids doing something interesting, then she’s eager to try it too.  Here she is giving it a go on a rope swing.  I do admire how willing she is to try things though – she’s definitely a risk taker!

It was a lovely afternoon and we plan to venture back again next summer (and maybe even take Daddy along too).

Halloween Shenanigans

by Sarah Novak on October 31, 2012

2012-10-28 Halloween 008

It’s been non-stop Halloween around here the last few days.  Although not my favorite holiday, I have to admit that it’s a ton more fun with a kid.  Cuteness just becomes magnified in silly outfits!

We took full advantage of the costume that Grandma and Grandpa Miller sent us, getting use out of it on 3 different occasions.

2012-10-28 Halloween 026

Our warm-up event took place last Sunday morning at CityToys, our favorite play gym in Lima.  There were 50+ kids and their parents there for a Babies 2 and under Halloween bash.  As you might imagine, it was a rollicking good time.  The only challenge was trying to determine if you child was the one that had the smelly diaper under all those layers of costume…

2012-10-29 Halloween 008

Monday morning was the second time she got to dress up.  This time it was for our weekly music class that we go to.  As you can see, she was totally into the whole costume thing by this point.  For a girl that hates hats and any restrictive clothes in general, she sure adjusted to this quite quickly!

2012-10-29 Halloween 009

Dance Nia, dance!

2012-10-29 Halloween 021

After music class the group ventured outside to the playground.  Nia recently started climbing the jungle gym and going down the slide.  Let’s just say she was a wee bit surprised at how fast the extra fabric on her costume made her zip down the slide…

2012-10-29 Halloween 032

Here’s our household helper Lupe with Nia (and the wagon of course, which is a beloved possession right now).

2012-10-31 Halloween 005

The BIG event of the week was the Embassy Trick or Treating.  Each year, Embassy Lima welcomes in all the children of both Americans and the locally-employed staff.  Between the two groups, it probably amounted to somewhere around 250 kids.  Each section of the Embassy decorates their area and gives out candy to the kids.

2012-10-31 Halloween 008

What was mind-blowing was the insane amount of effort that had obviously been put in by each department.  Each one had a theme (bat cave, legoland, super mario, etc) and all the staff were decked out in corresponding costumes.  The walls were covered in decoration, so much so you couldn’t even really tell you were in an office.  I was AWED.  I’d love more than anything to show you pictures, but we’re not allowed to photograph inside the Embassy for security reasons.

2012-10-31 Halloween 011

The event was also tailored to various ages.  Some of the departments were clearly geared towards younger children (Super Mario, Lego) while there were distinctly scary areas for the older kids.

Little Nia was a hoot.  She was completely overstimulated and stared open-mouthed for much of the event.  She figured out that it was a special day and seemed to construe that she was somehow an honored guest because she spent the entire time insisting upon walking around while waving, smiling and making a symphony of squawks and coos.  Her efforts were awarded with much adoration!

2012-10-31 Halloween 020

After all the trick or treating was done everyone gathered outside for a costume contest, food and outdoor games.  Hats off to everyone who made this such an amazing event.  I’m already looking forward to next year!

I leave you with a picture of our worn-out ladybug dragging her poorly-treated bunny.  For the full photo gallery experience, GO HERE.

Nia’s Big 1st Birthday Bash

by Sarah Novak on October 23, 2012

IMG_2241

It’s hard to believe, but our little girl just crossed the one year mark. I’m not going to lie and say that the entire year flew by because there were days in those first 3 months that felt ENDLESS. However, time seemed to gather speed as we found our parenting groove. I’m enjoying the reflection that comes with this milestone, both celebrating all the joy and wonder she’s brought into our life AND the amazing resiliency and problem-solving-abilities Nick and I discovered as parents! I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – parenting is not for the feint of heart!

IMG_2248

I felt a lot of Mommy pressure to have a grandiose 1st birthday party (extravagant bashes are quite the trend overseas). The problem was, quite simply, that we don’t have enough friends Nia’s age yet to make up a reasonable group. Just as I was plotting strategies for how we could befriend an adequate number of invitees in time for the party, my wise husband Nicholas reminded me that she was not actually going to remember any of this. He reasoned that we just keep it simple (cake, lots of playing, etc) and shower her with love instead. So that’s just what we did… and what a grand time we had doing it!

IMG_2276_edited-1

Nia’s birthday was technically on a Monday, so we started our partying on Sunday so Daddy could participate. Our Sunday included a stop at Nia’s favorite PlayGym followed by a mini party and cake tasting. Our usual Sunday routine involves watching football at our friend Greg and Ladan’s house so with their blessing, we did our celebrating there and included them in the festivities.  Most of these great photos are courtesy of Ladan and Greg gets credit for Nia’s biggest smiles – who knew he could make such an awesome monkey noise?

_MG_8582

Nia was an absolute hoot with the cake. She started by looking at it with disgust but eventually got curious enough to take a lick. After that, she was hooked! Instead of having me describe it, why not watch the amusement for yourself:

I should mention that we failed to anticipate the wretched sugar crash that happened a few hours after eating cake. Oops! Let’s just say Ms. Nia was not at her best…

Nick went off to work on Monday morning but Nia and I continued the celebration. The day started off with a surprise gift from Lupe.

IMG_2015

Next up was Baby Music Class, where the group all serenaded Nia with Happy Birthday (in two languages, mind you!)

After a celebratory nap, we were back to the PlayGym again for another day of fun. We closed our day by skyping with both sets of Grandparents and opening the gifts they’d sent.

As you can see by the photos, we found much joy in our celebration… in fact, it’s practically impossible to have a dull time when you’re with our spirited little girl! We are so thankful to have her bright light in this world.

We love you Nia!  Happy First Birthday!

1st Birthday Preview

by Sarah Novak on October 21, 2012

Nia Eats Cake

Nia’s 1st Birthday is technically Monday, but we decided to do the bulk of our celebrating on Sunday so Daddy Nick could be included in the fun.

We knew you wouldn’t want to miss out on seeing Nia get down and dirty with the cake, so we made a little video for you!  Watch for a more complete recap of the Bday in the next day or two…

The Joy of Music Class

by Sarah Novak on August 29, 2012

IMG_1693

Nia and I recently started going to a weekly music class in our Miraflores neighborhood.  It’s a steal of a deal at $4 a session for an hour of music.  Carlos, the musician, is quite versatile too.  Each class he plays the Cajón (the peruvian drum box), his guitar AND his trumpet.  The kids bring their own instruments too and practice playing their drums loudly and softly.

IMG_1686

All the other good children sit in their Mommies/Nannies laps and pound their drum as told.  Does my child?  HELL NO.  She pretty much goes crazy the minute the music starts.  This kid L-O-V-E-S music, which I’m thrilled about.  Just wish she’d be willing to sit still a bit more.  Maybe when she’s 11 months…

Not gonna lie, it’s good for Mommies too because the entire thing is in Spanish so I get to practice using some basic (translation: kid-speak) words that are good to know.  I’m making great progress on my farm animals and commands (sit, stand, play, hands up, etc).

IMG_1698

To our future visitors – GET EXCITED because you’re gonna love going to Spanish music class!

La Fiesta de los Niños

by Sarah Novak on August 23, 2012

CityToys Kids Day 005

Sorry for the lack of blogging lately, I’ve been doing a ton of writing during the day for my upcoming business launch of CanceRevolution and I just don’t have the energy to do more writing at night.  As a compromise, I’ll indulge you with pictures of the babe instead!

Last Sunday was the Fiesta de los Niños in Peru and there were a variety of events going on around town.  We choose to celebrate at CityToys, the Peruvian equivalent of Gymboree.  All 3 of us went and played in the morning and then I returned that night with Nia for the kid’s show (a crazy spectacle indeed!)  Here are some highlights from our day:

CityToys Kids Day 009

Ms. Nia was NOT, I repeat NOT a fan of Mickey Mouse!

CityToys Kids Day 022

She did however, dig the giant mirror.  Who needs toys when mirrors are around, right?

206090_454249011281446_364903453_n

Taking home our loot – I decided Nia was too young to enjoy the cupcake, so Mommy polished it off!

390965_454248304614850_1741076259_n

The performers, who usually frequent the birthday party circuit, were quite impressive.  Every song had a different prop that they passed out to all the kids (ie: ballerina song, every kid gets a tutu).  This went on for roughly 15 songs.  There were also costumed characters and my personal favorite, a bubble machine!  Not too shabby.  I could have done without the at-capacity crowd, but Nia was happy so we rolled with it!
